Training Course Information

Cytogenetic biodosimetry and imaging flow cytometry

This one-day, hands-on training course will introduce participants to the fundamentals of cytogenetic techniques used in biodosimetry and to advancements in cytogenetic imaging and data analysis. Designed for beginners and those looking to strengthen their practical skills, the day will combine foundational theory with live demonstrations and guided analysis.

The day will be split into 2 half-day modules offering the following:

Module 1: CBMN Assay Essentials

  • Participants will explore the principles of cytogenetic biodosimetry and gain practical exposure to the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay. The session will include demonstrations of blood culture setup, slide preparation and staining, followed by guided microscope scoring and an overview of data analysis.

Module 2: CBMN Assay with Imaging Flow Cytometry

  • Participants will be introduced to the capabilities of the ImageStream (ISX) imaging flow cytometry platform. The session will include demonstrations of CBMN-ISX sample preparation, learning how to run samples on the ISX, and review image-based data analysis.

Gene expression

This one-day course on gene expression-based biodosimetry will provide theoretical background on the principles of the assay and a novel hands-on training on a cost-effective and user-friendly approach for rapid triage in radiological/nuclear emergencies. The participants will cover the basis of this biodosimetry approach using ex vivo irradiated human blood samples and the practical part will include all the steps from RNA extraction to PCR, gel electrophoresis, and final assessment of exposed/unexposed samples. The course will be delivered by experienced UKHSA radiation protection scientists and is designed for individuals with an interest in practical novel molecular biology strategies applied to biological dosimetry.

EPR dosimetry

This one-day course on Electron Paramagnetic Resonance will be a combination of basic concepts, advanced technologies, and good practice in sample irradiation. The afternoon will be dedicated to the use of EasySpin

The main course headings are as follows:

  • Basic Concepts in EPR
  • Advanced EPR Technologies Relevant for Dosimetry
  • Applied EPR Dosimetry Procedures
  • Introduction to EasySpin
  • Simulation of EPR Spectra with EasySpin
  • Interactive Discussion and Course Evaluation

Space radiation effects

This one-day course will cover many aspects of radiation exposure to astronauts in space including the space radiation environment, operational radiation protection, biodosimetry methods and workflow for astronauts, modelling of radiation doses. The afternoon will be dedicated to practical aspects of astronaut dosimetry including setting up space exposure calibration curves, image analysis of translocations, dose calculations and comparison to modelling results.
